Small Solar Installs Gain Traction in Chicago Neighborhoods

Micro solar systems under 1kW are finding their niche among Chicago homeowners seeking energy savings without major roof work.

Chicago homeowners are installing surprisingly small solar systems — and the numbers make sense for specific situations.

A recent South State Street installation shows the trend: just 0.29kW inverter output for a $22,000 project. While that seems expensive per watt, these micro installations serve homeowners who can't support full-scale solar arrays.

Why go small:

- Older Chicago roofs (especially on bungalows and greystones) may not support heavy panel loads

- Historic district restrictions limit panel visibility and placement options

- Apartment buildings and condos have limited individual roof access

- Testing solar viability before committing to whole-house systems

**Permitting advantage:** Small systems qualify for Chicago's Express Permit Program, processing in days rather than weeks. The State Street project processed in 8 days with a $300 total fee.

**Consider the economics carefully.** At current installation costs, micro systems take longer to pay back than full-scale arrays. But they're often the only solar option for Chicago's dense, older neighborhoods.

**Talk to your contractor about sizing.** Even small systems need structural evaluation — Chicago's wind loads and snow accumulation affect all rooftop installations, regardless of size.
