Chicago Express Permits Hit Record Processing Times

Same-day permit approvals are becoming reality for certain Chicago construction projects, but there's a catch.

Chicago's Express Permit Program is delivering on its promise of faster approvals, with some permits now processing in under 24 hours.

Recent data shows permits processing in as little as zero to two days — a dramatic improvement from the traditional 4-6 week timeline for standard residential work. One electrical permit on North Springfield processed the same day it was submitted.

What qualifies for express processing:

- Tuckpointing and masonry repairs under certain square footage

- Small-scale electrical work like service disconnects

- Non-structural interior alterations (plumbing/electrical replacement)

- Small solar installations under specific wattage limits

**The trade-off:** Express permits come with higher fees. A simple electrical permit that might cost $75 under standard review jumps to $500-575 through the express program.

**Smart timing strategy:** If your project needs to start immediately — like emergency tuckpointing before Chicago's freeze-thaw season — the express route pays for itself in avoided weather delays. For non-urgent work, standard processing might make more financial sense.

Check your project scope against express program guidelines before applying. The time savings can be substantial, but so can the premium you'll pay.
